Famous self drive routes in Cape Town

Chapman's Peak Drive

Chapman's Peak is Cape Town's most picturesque self drive, that will sweep you away from Hout Bay towards Noordhoek beach and Kommetjie. It is a toll road that costs around R20 per car, each time you pass over (from either side). This is the perfect self drive for a lazy afternoon in Cape Town and can take you round trip to Cape Point, Simon's Town, Fish Hoek, Muizenberg and back.

Gordon's Bay to Betty's Bay

This self drive is a bit further (Gordon's Bay is about 40 minutes from Cape Town on the N2 highway), but also well worth it, often with abundant sealife during whaling season (September - November). The road also curves along the coast, past Koeël Bay (famous surfing spot), Rooi Els, Pringle Bay and on towards Betty's Bay. Pack a picknick basket and enjoy lunch at the famous botanical gardens in Betty's Bay or have lunch at the Whaling Station, a quaint little restaurant with amazing food, also in Betty's Bay. You can either turn around here, or continue towards Kleinmond or Hermanus (another 30 minutes) , but your self drive will become a day trip at this point.
